Winemaker’s Tasting Notes

Wild strawberry, honeysuckle, iris, cantaloupe and vanilla spice aromatics fill the glass. A light bodied clean entry introduces flavors of Bing cherry, rhubarb, raspberry and red licorice. The wine is balanced with light mid palate tannins and a long fresh acidity.

The fruit was hand picked and transported to the winery where it was fermented naturally with native yeast. Each of the three clones (115, Swan and Martini) were fermented separately in small open top bins. The must was punched down by hand 3 to 4 times per day until dryness then lightly pressed to French Burgundy barrels (20% new). Malolactic fermentation was completed in barrels and the wine was racked clean and blended at this time. The wine is unfined and unfiltered.

Vintage Notes

Seamless season of heavenly hangtime and phenomenal phenolic development. February saw abundant rains, followed by lots of filtered light in spring and early summer. Both bud break and flowering occurred a bit late, but under ideal weather conditions, creating plentiful and even fruit set. Summer brought generous sun during the day and cooler marine influences, virtually uninterrupted by major heat spikes. The relatively mild summer followed by extended fall sunshine and moderate heat created near-ideal conditions for winemakers to allow their fruit to accumulate flavor complexity with gradual increases in sugar levels. 2018 was considered a bumper crop with big yields and exceptional quality.
